Safe Sleep for Babies

Every time you put baby down, follow these safe sleep tips:

Put baby to sleep on their back

Always put baby on their back when sleeping

Share your room not your bed

Baby sleeps in a crib, bassinet, or co-sleeper in your room

Clear your baby’s crib

Remove blankets and soft objects

Baby’s crib should be firm and flat

Use the right size, snug fitting sheet

Safe sleep, every time

Never let a baby sleep on a couch or adult bed

Don’t hold baby while you sleep

Always put baby in their sleep space before you fall asleep

More ways to keep baby safe while sleeping:

  • Remember that car seats are for travel only. Once you reach your destination gently move your sleeping baby to a safe spot like a pack ‘n play or crib.
  • Set up sleep support for yourself, a partner, parent, or friend can help with baby while you get some rest.
  • Keep baby’s environment smoke and vape free, and make sure anyone caring for baby is drug- and alcohol-free.
  • Don’t let baby get overheated. Keep room temperature 68-72°F (20-22°C)] and don’t put too many layers on baby.
  • Give babies plenty of “tummy time” when they are awake, and when someone is watching them.
  • Take baby for regular pediatrician check-ups.
  • Sucking on a pacifier with no attachments is safe for baby during sleep.
  • Any breast feeding or human milk is healthy for baby.
