Tips for getting a background check

To make sure the process goes smoothly — and that you complete your background check quickly — make sure to follow this guidance.

• Always use the Background Check Information System (BCIS). You need to have a BCIS profile and to submit all documents and information through the system.
• Make sure you get your Applicant Tracking Number (ATN) through BCIS. Trying to get one another way will slow down your progress.
• Double check your information in BCIS and your ATN. Use your legal name. Make sure your birth date is correct and check for errors. If there’s a mismatch, the system may require you to get fingerprints again.
• Only create one Applicant Tracking Number (ATN). You only need one to get your fingerprints.

Not following this guidance could delay your background check or prevent it from going through.
